I wanted to leave a review about my last visit to the emergency room, describing the racist and rude behavior I encountered from the nurses and staff. However, after seeing numerous complaints and shared experiences of mistreatment here, and noticing that no action has been taken against the hospital’s unprofessional conduct, I’ve lost hope that my review would make any difference. However, I cannot forget the sight of my father suffering from severe pain and screaming for almost two hours due to the negligent and indifferent behavior of a racist nurse.

I was in the ER from 7 pm to 2 am. I was in the hallway which is understandable with how busy it was. The nurse who worked with me hooked my IV bag to someone else’s bed and when they rolled that person away they almost ripped my IV out of my arm. I had the worst bruising on my arm for days after as well. I waited such a long time to get my CT scan. I also mentioned I had a migraine and they wouldn’t let me take my own meds and they said they would bring me some meds. They never did. They sent me home saying I had the stomach flu but my GI doctor two days later did a stool sample and it turns out I have salmonella poisoning. The hospital completely missed this. Both of my liver enzymes were elevated which is indicative of salmonella (with a quick Google search I found this). Also I had mentioned I are chicken prior to getting sick and had all of the symptoms of food poisoning. Extremely disappointed with Yale. I was always told they were above and beyond with hospital care … Apparently not.

This place is slower than molasses on an ice cold day. They take employees first over people who have been there for hours. Make excuses for all the while. They are also more worried about socializing with each other than tending to patients. Furthermore it doesn’t matter what I say here bad reviews all get the same attention same remarks. It is kind of ridiculous. Look empty rooms and I’m stuck in a chair in the hallway where everyone hears everything that’s going on. Where is HIPPA When the employee won’t use the restroom you know it’s dirty as hell. Garbage all on the floor. I thought they had people who clean. Or they let them go so someone in the higher up can pad their pockets more.

I live in Yale territory and used to think highly of Yale Health until they charged me $1,500.00 for zero services rendered. It should be considered insurance fraud but my health insurance said, “as soon as the emergency department brings you back and sits you in a bed, they can charge whatever they want’. What a weird medical system? I received vital signs at registration by Yale employees who visibly HATE their job and HATE patients. The interaction was intimidating and repulsive. I was immediately brought back to a room and received a bag of ice. The combined interaction with 2 clinicians was < 4 minutes. No plan of care was communicated to me and I sat there for 3 hours. That horrible experience costed me $1,500.00? The next day I went to Midstate, who recognized my pain and serious infection. I was admitted. All employees were pleasant and they had an IV with antibiotics running in 45 minutes from entering the building.

This hospital is not equipped to care for the number of people who come thru the door! And it is filthy dirty. I am in the ER after a car accident. I have at least 2 broken bones, a finger and a foot! Still, they left me in a wheelchair in the visitor waiting area!!! It’s been at least an hour so far!! This place is a joke!!!

Pure ignorant doctors. It’s mentally distressing for Yale doctors to tell you that your sickness is all in your head and it’s anxiety when you actually had mononucleosis, after 2 visits to Yale, Hartford hospital finally listened to my concerns and got me an actual diagnosis instead of insisting it has to be anxiety. Do better. The only good thing about my visit was my wonderful nurses who made me feel heard and safe.

HELL ON EARTH! You are lined up in beds in all the hallways like sardines. Nurses are all over but have learned never to look anyone in the eye, so after a few hours you begin to feel invisible. You are not offended a blanket or even a cup of water! I was left there for an EKG due to severe tachycardia, high blood pressure and elevated heart rate while suffering from benzodiazepine withdrawal that could potentially be deadly. My doctor decided to cut me off after 15 years on this medication without a taper, which threw me into severe withdrawal syndrome even though I never abused my medication. She informed me to go to the Yale ER, they didn’t really know what to do with me so they left me with no human contact from 7pm-7AM No water, no blanket, no human contact whatsoever. The smells of unite and vomit are overwhelming, the bathrooms are spilling over with human waste of every kind. No one will help you or speak to you unless you literally SCREAM! My temperature was normal when I came in and after spending the night there it went up to 103!! I couldn’t get to the bathroom by myself and nobody would help me. I was deathly sick and not ONE person noticed! You could be lying there dead for 2 days and not be noticed! People are screaming, crying for help, BEGGING for help and nobody ever comes so it goes on all night, sick human beings LITERALLY BEGGING FOR HELP THAT NEVER COMES! I was so sick and appalled of the lack of humanity and empathy that I didn’t know what to do. I continued to get sicker and sicker until I had a seizure that was not even NOTICED until another PATIENT noticed and called for someone!! I was not hooked up to a heart monitor as I should have been so my fever and seizure were not noticed. My whole body was violently shaking and STILL NOT ONE PERSON NOTICED! The withdrawal became so bad that I did begin to have seizures, which were supposed to be prevented by going to the ER!! Bottom line, I was sent there to die instead of being saved and cared for. The complete lack of compassion, care and empathy is astounding, let alone that none of them do their JOB! They sit around and laugh and talk while they decide what they are going to order to eat! They gossip, make fun of the elderly patients with dementia that are calling out for help hour after hour! The nurses mimic them, make fun of them and get very snotty and downright nasty to these poor, scared elderly patients who are HUMAN BEINGS! It broke my heart the way they treated by nurses in their early 20’s. I became so upset seeing the elder abuse that was going on I decided to turn on the recorder on my phone, and what I now have is beyond heartbreaking!! As sick as I was, I was still more concerned for the elderly patients who were blatantly being severely mistreated and did not deserve to be dehumanized by being made fun of and laughed at while they were scared, sick and suffering. I have not yet decided what I’m going to do with what I have learned and with the evidence I have regarding the mistreatment, but Yale is “supposed” to be one of the best hospitals in The United States, and from my experience I certainly pray that if you make it out of the ER and get admitted, things change. But, I MUST PRESS, that the care you receive in The Emergency Department is comparable to the care you would receive in a third world country prison hospital. I hope this review helps someone consider making some serious changes. As no human being should be treated this poorly, especially our elderly!

The wait is forever. They talk bout their outside life more than the care of the patient. Then everyone is in the hallway you can everybody info . What happened to hippa. Never again.!

I have come here several occasions and it’s amazing how they don’t have the proper machines to do anything and have only 1 of them working in the entire hospital. I was in the ER for over 6 hours waiting for a simple exam. They do not provide comfortable chairs for visitors or beverages. The bathrooms are constantly disgusting. Although the staff are very friendly and apologize for the long wait. It’s hard to see them having to work at such conditions.

The truth is that the Yale hospital, especially the adult emergency department is worth nothing. they have kept all of New Haven, they gives the face of charging valet parking to those who go to the emergency room. Terrible service, four hour wait with my adult daughter who was vomiting in the ER, in horrible pain. Nurses at the front desk having fun with the security guards. Four security guards, two having coffee and all laughing with the nurses at the front desk out loud as if they were at a party outside. I pay 150.00 because my insurance is private, not that I go for nothing. If I go it is because it really is an emergency. Fix the system you have that is worthless. AND THE SECURITY GUARDS AND NURSES AT THE FRONT DESK THEY NEED TO BE PROFESSIONALS.

HONORABLE MENTION #2 – Kristin Jay July 2022

I started out in the waiting room and had a seven hour wait. I was in a bed in the hallway. I requested medicine from my nurses several times and had to wait a long time. I wasn’t offered ice. The only person that was helpful was the registration girl. When I went to SRC VERDI 2 South Observation the TVs were very hard to use. The room was extremely hot. The food was horrible. I got a scrambled egg and left it on the plate. The bathrooms that you had to share with all the other patients was dirty. The trash was full each time. There was one nice tech that took the time to give me a shower. Very nice. I sure hope I don’t have to go back to this hospital again. I would request a different hospital if I had to go again.

Me and my wife had the absolute worst birthing experience there. the birthing staff were cold and distant, extremely unfriendly and gave the sense that this was not something they wanted to be doing. We were extremely uncomfortable and the epidural was terrible. Some inexperienced nurse stuck my wife in the back for close to 30 minutes during serious contractions before handing it off to the senior Dr. Who just sat on his phone and watched the whole time. Besides that they were consistently rough with my new born son and had no love and care in their touch. The only good part of all this was a successful delivery and this amazing boy I brought home.
